North Shore Woof Pack is a non-profit organization that was established in July 2009 to support the creation of a dog park at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park in Haleiwa. In the near future, we will also offer free seminars to the community on topics such as canine behavior and socialization. Our goal is to promote healthy human-to-dog and dog-to-dog relationships through education and community outreach.
WHY A DOG PARK?
Statistics show that many dogs are relinquished to the shelter or abandoned because of behavioral issues. We believe that many of those "problem" behaviors can be avoided with proper training and socialization. One of the biggest issues that dog owners face is dog-to-dog interactions. Sometimes aggression is the issue, but often dogs are just overexcited, timid or pushy with other dogs because they don't have enough opportunities to be around other dogs and therefore to learn appropriate behaviors. Dog-to-dog socialization is very important for both puppies in the developmental stage and for adult dogs on an ongoing basis. Although dog parks are not the only way to socialize a dog, it is definitely one of the easiest ways, because there are always other dogs and people at the dog park, and they are there to socialize.
Dog parks all over the country are widely used, and the
Kaiaka dog park will most likely be no different. Statistics from the
Hawaiian Humane Society show that the North Shore and Central Oahu
represent over 15% of all Oahu households that own pets.
In this modern day and age, we humans are so busy with work and our lives that we don't tend to take enough time to connect with people in our community. We believe that human residents on the North Shore will
also benefit from this proposed dog park, as it will be a gathering place not
only for dogs but also for us humans!
